Transfer Prints
This week we are using an oil pastel transfer method to practice drawing TEXTURE - the way something looks like it feels.
Transfer Process
1) Start by choosing an animal and draw it as large as you can on your paper. Remember to draw quick shapes first to map out your proportions before going back in to make your more detailed lines. You do not need to shade or add TOO much detail yet, just draw outlines with the important details such as facial features (as if it were a drawing from a coloring book.)
2) hold your page up to the window and trace the image to the back of the page. Now you should have your drawing on the front AND the back of your page.
3) On the side you just traced, add bold and blended oil pastels. You can choose to do wild and crazy colors if you don't want to use realistic colors in your animal.
4) Flip your page over on top of a brand new sheet of paper and use two small pieces of masking tape to secure the two pages together (The oil pastel colored side should be face down on top of your new clean sheet of paper!) Then take a ball point pen and draw over your original drawing, making marks to recreate texture. Think about the actual texture of your animal, is it smooth, slimy, scaly, furry, or feathery? What types of marks can you make with your pen to recreate that texture? Once your drawing is completely covered with pen texture, peel apart your papers and you now have your solid oil pastel drawing as well as your transfer print!
